Mitrelli in Angola: A Strategic Partner in Transforming the Healthcare Sector

Data:

Angola is currently demonstrating a clear and unequivocal commitment to the continuous improvement of its National Health System, anchored in the expansion and modernization of healthcare infrastructure as a central pillar of national development and public well-being.

This commitment is reflected in official sector data. Between 2017 and 2024, the country increased the number of healthcare facilities from 2,611 to 5,958, a 128% growth, while expanding its healthcare workforce by 46.1%. With the support of the World Bank, Angola also plans to train approximately 38,000 healthcare professionals by 2028, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, with a focus on general and family medicine, accelerating progress toward universal health coverage.

In parallel, efforts are underway to establish a resilient National Health Fund, supported by revenues from the extractive sector, aimed at ensuring financial predictability, strengthening emergency response capacity, and safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the system.

Within this context of clearly defined national priorities, Mitrelli has positioned itself as a trusted development partner, working closely with Angolan institutions to deliver transformative, large-scale healthcare projects that are reshaping the country’s healthcare landscape.

The Swiss-based company has developed a comprehensive model that goes beyond infrastructure delivery, integrating technical capacity building and knowledge transfer to ensure the sustainability of the national healthcare system, while aligning its projects with the country’s strategic priorities.

As part of broader public policy efforts, Angola has prioritized the decentralization of healthcare services and the reduction of regional disparities, bringing specialized care closer to populations that previously had to travel long distances to access medical services.

Mitrelli plays a key role in this transformation, acting as a strategic partner capable of designing, implementing, and sustaining technologically advanced healthcare infrastructure, from initial concept through sustained operations and maintenance, ensuring that public investment translates into long-term, tangible benefits for communities.

In a notable achievement, between November 2023 and November 2024, Mitrelli delivered three state-of-the-art general hospitals in the provinces of Bengo, Cuanza Sul, and Cuanza Norte, significantly strengthening the national public healthcare network.

The General Hospital of Bengo (inaugurated in November 2023), the General Hospital of Cuanza Sul (October 2024), and the General Hospital of Cuanza Norte (November 2024),  the latter with 200 beds and 15,000 square meters, now serve more than 3 million residents, offering a combined capacity of 600 beds across over 100,000 square meters of healthcare infrastructure.

These facilities provide local populations with access to comprehensive healthcare services within their own provinces, dramatically reducing the time and cost associated with traveling for specialized medical treatment.

The hospitals offer 15 medical specialties, including oncology, surgery, rehabilitation, pediatrics, hemodialysis, maternity services, and both adult and neonatal intensive care units. Services that were once concentrated in the capital are now accessible across the country, directly addressing one of the sector’s key national priorities.

Equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging technologies and modern clinical laboratories, these facilities have significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of complex conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases, enabling earlier detection, reduced waiting times, and more effective therapeutic outcomes.

The integration of digital health information systems ensures efficient clinical data management and process traceability, while dedicated hospital waste treatment units guarantee strict compliance with environmental and biosafety standards, reflecting a shared commitment to clinical excellence and environmental responsibility.

Beyond physical infrastructure and biomedical equipment, a structured investment in human capital has been a key driver of long-term sustainability.

Mitrelli has implemented comprehensive training programs to equip healthcare professionals with the skills required to operate advanced technologies and ensure system self-sufficiency. More than 3,400 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, biomedical technicians, and administrative staff, have already been employed and trained to work in these facilities, reinforcing technical autonomy and service excellence.

In addition to the hospitals already delivered, Mitrelli is currently constructing a University Hospital, whose main structure is already completed. This flagship project represents a major milestone in capacity building, serving as a theoretical and practical training center for healthcare professionals, combining education, innovation, and research in line with national priorities to develop highly specialized talent.

At the same time, the Grafanil Hospital, a 45,000-square-meter facility, is also under development. With 144 beds, four operating rooms, 15 clinical departments, and a hemodynamics laboratory, it represents a significant step forward in Angola’s investment in high-complexity healthcare infrastructure.

The social impact of these projects is both significant and measurable. More than 3 million people now have access to modern healthcare services close to their communities, with notable improvements in maternal and child health indicators through new maternity wards and neonatal intensive care units.

The creation of approximately 4,000 direct jobs, largely filled by Angolan citizens, has also generated substantial economic impact, stimulating local economies and creating qualified employment opportunities in the regions where these hospitals operate.

Communities hosting these facilities benefit not only from improved healthcare access but also from the multiplier effect generated by large-scale infrastructure, which attracts complementary services, supports population retention, and contributes to social cohesion and local economic development.

At Mitrelli, we believe that when healthcare systems are accessible and robust, people live longer and healthier lives, employment opportunities increase, and communities thrive, directly contributing to economic resilience and national stability.

With more than three decades of partnership in Angola and over 100 national-scale projects delivered across Africa, Mitrelli has demonstrated that its integrated development model, spanning design, financing, implementation, maintenance, and capacity building, provides an effective and sustainable response to the country’s strategic priorities.

In a context where economic diversification and improved quality of life are central to national development, Mitrelli continues to position itself as a strategic partner, illustrating how the private sector can act as a catalyst for structural transformation, generating both deep social impact and sustainable economic returns.

By working side by side with national institutions, Mitrelli is helping shape a healthier, more prosperous, and resilient future for all Angolans, aligned with a vision of a country that places healthcare at the foundation of its progress.
